What is Breast Cancer?
A malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast.
Malignant tumor: a group of cancer cells that can metastasize to other parts of the body.
Causes
Mutations in DNA that cause normal breast cells to become cancerous
DNA mutations can be inherited or randomly occur in single breast cells
Key Statistics about Breast Cancer:
~1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.
~1 in 1,000 men in the US will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
In 2014...
~232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women
~40,000 women will die from breast cancer
~2,360 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men
~430 men will die from breast cancer
